Meet the GPs
Dr Nigel C Sylvester MB, BS, Newcastle 1977, DRCOG, MRCGP
Nigel is the senior partner and has been in the Practice for over 30 years. He qualified in Newcastle in 1977 and migrated south where he completed his training in Southampton.
Along with caring for patients at the Friarsgate Practice, Nigel has recently been appointed to the board of the local CCG, which takes over the functions of the PCT in 2013. The West Hampshire CCG is responsible for the commissioning of care on behalf of 500,000 patients. As vice chair of the local CCG, Nigel is out of the surgery two days a week on CCG business and available for appointments at Friarsgate surgery three days a week.
He is married to Sue, who also works full time for the NHS and they have a daughter who is a teacher and a son who is studying at Durham University.
When not at work he enjoys sailing on the Solent or having fun on his a mountain bike, trying to keep fit.
Dr Tim J Stannard BM, BS, Nottingham 1983, DRCOG, MRCGP, DCH
Tim joined the Practice in 1989 and enjoys the challenges that the NHS and patients give him. He has a particular interest in Paediatrics and Diabetes.
Tim is married with three children and, when leisure time is available, enjoys walking and cycling.
Dr Lorraine Cole MB, BS, London 1984, DRCOG
Lorraine has been with the Friarsgate Practice for 18 years and still thoroughly enjoys working as a family doctor. During her time here she has also worked as a schooldoctor, a daytime TV doctor and is currently a GP appraiser. She is married with three children and two dogs and enjoys playing tennis, golf and walking.
Dr Niki J Wright BM, Southampton 1987, MRCGP, DRCOG
Practice and has a particular interest in healthy living. Niki, who has completed a certificate in Obesity Management at Reading University, is involved in the local Health Walks programme, running a walking group for patients on a Wednesday morning. In addition to this Niki is currently a GP appraiser.
Married with three children, Niki still finds time for regular walking herself, cycling and swimming as well as being actively involved in the local community and is an assistant Cub Scout leader too.
Dr Martyn D Diaper MB, BS, London 1989, MRCGP
Martyn was born and raised in Hampshire, attending Medical School at St.Thomas's Hospital in London. He joined Friarsgate in 1994.
He is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and has a keen interest in quality improvement and patient safety. He is both a member of the Primary Care Teaching Faculty and Fellow of the Improvement Faculty at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. He enjoys the opportunity this brings in helping NHS staff deliver better patient care.
Martyn lives in Winchester with his wife and three children.
Dr Michael G B Lambert MB BS, London 1989, MRCGP, DRCOG, DCH, DOccMed
Michael trained at St Thomas’s Hospital in London, and after working in the UK and New Zealand, joined as a Partner at Friarsgate in 1995. He is interested in all aspects of general practice and thoroughly enjoys work as a family doctor. He is also trained in Occupational Medicine and offers Occupational Health Services from within the Practice.
Michael has a hectic family life with his wife Helen, their four children and their Spaniel "Scamp". When time allows, he may be out on his bicycle, on the golf course or on the tennis court.
Dr Helen Lambert BM, MRCP MRCGP
Having grown up in rural Lancashire, Helen came to study medicine in Southampton in 1993 and stayed to live and work in the local area. She joined Friarsgate as a GP in 2004. Helen is currently a GP appraiser.
Helen enjoys all aspects of General Practice but especially caring for families and patients with cardiac problems.
Helen lives in Kings Somborne with her husband and young family. She enjoys family life, cooking and keeping fit.
Dr Stephen M Fowler MB BS (London 1995), MRSCEd, MRCGP
Stephen was born and brought up in Winchester and attended Peter Symonds College, before moving to London where he trained at Charing Cross Hospital. He then worked in Emergency Medicine before becoming a GP and joined Friarsgate as a Partner in 2010. He enjoys all aspects of family medicine and has a particular interest in Minor Surgery.
He lives locally with his wife and young family. Any leisure time is spent with his family and also tinkering with his other love - an old MGB Roadster.
Dr Sarita Sluman BM MRCGP DFFP
Sarita graduated from Southampton University in 1999 and she has continually worked in the surrounding area since then. She enjoys alls aspects of General Practice but particularly enjoys Paediatrics and Ear, Nose and Throat problems.
Sarita has a busy family life, with three children and a black Labrador called Henry. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with the family, going for walks or cycle rides in the New Forest and swimming.
Dr Helen Walters MBBS MRCGP DRCOG DFSRH
Helen joined Friarsgate as a partner in November 2011. She trained at Barts and The London School of medicine and stayed in East London to complete her GP training. Helen enjoys all areas of General Practice, but has a particular interest in women's health.
Helen lives in Newbury with her husband and in her spare time enjoys running and playing tennis.

Dr Frans Berkelaar ArtsExamen, MSc, MBANSV
Frans trained to be a doctor in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and did his GP training in the UK. He’s been enjoying caring for Friarsgate Practice patients since 2005. He finds time spent in the out of hour’s service an interesting and different part of his work.
Married with four children, Frans has a very busy family life, which he really enjoys, but still manages to find some time here and there to do sports and woodworking.
Dr Claire Baker MBBCh, DCh, MRCGP
Claire moved to Winchester in 2007 after 12 years living and working as a GP in London. Claire is from Somerset and did her GP training in Bath.
Claire greatly enjoys the variety of General Practice work and supporting her patients and their families through their lives and events.
Claire is married with 2 children and enjoys literature, walking, cycling and tennis.
Dr Athena Cotterill, MBBCH MRCGP
Athena arrived in the UK in 1997 after completing her medical degree in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has been living and working as a GP in Hampshire since 2001 and enjoys all aspects of general practice.
She has a wonderful family and 2 gorgeous children. Her hobbies include swimming, art and jewellery making.
